Mate Monster: Mate on f7

You already know the Scholar’s Mate. Your opponent did not defend very well and you could easily mate his king.

Now, things get a bit harder. What to do if Black tries to prevent the Scholar’s Mate? Then you need real mate monster powers to win the game!

Take a look at the examples to learn how you can still attempt a Scholar’s Mate.

What do you have to do?

Your goal is checkmate on f7 (the red square). Your bishop and queen are going to help each other. Come up with a plan: which moves do you need to play to checkmate the king?

White’s queen and bishop both point at the red square (f7).
To prevent Scholar’s Mate, Black moves a pawn between f7 and the queen.
This blocks the queen and attacks her at the same time!

The queen needs to get out, but she does so in a canny way…
The queen moves back two squares diagonally, where she threatens mate on f7 once again!
Black is unaware of this and moves his knight.
White’s queen captures the pawn on f7: checkmate!
